Dr. Winter is a good Dr. and probably better than most but she’s limited on time as all Drs are now that medicine has evolved into such a timed billable PROFITABLE business. Medicine is not as much about patients anymore as it is about liability and all hoops one must jump through to receive timely care regarding referrals, prescriptions and diagnostic services. She does the best she can given the parameters she’s bound to work within. I was reminded of that from one of Optum’s speciality Dr.’s just last week. Their time is extremely short with patients which can profoundly impact a good outcome for complicated medical conditions. Good medicine with good outcomes require time!! Good medicine requires good listening skills, it requires Dr.’s going above & beyond the norm for their patients if the need requires doing so. It requires an honest, transparent approach, it requires allowing Dr.’s to actually call their patients if needed, not having medical assistants assigned to that (non billable) task for complicated medical patients. It requires a more human connection, following up, checking in, simply caring more. It requires a more collaborative interdisciplinary effort with specific institutions and It requires the needs of the patient to be THE MOST IMPORTANT factor in all decisions made. Experienced, good Dr.’s are in short supply further complicating probably the most complicated profitable (dysfunctional) American health system. I’m not the typical patient and the typical approach to my complicated medical needs and the typical medical protocol unfortunately have not provided me with a good outcome. With all that said, I believe Dr. Winter is better than most primarily because of her experience and not being so centered on her ego which is a condition Dr.’s by nature seem to have and can be extremely destructive to patients.
